Tour Highlights


Day 1: Sydney - Canberra

Depart Sydney this morning for your journey to the nation’s capital via the Southern Highlands with a stop at historic Berrima. Visit Gold Creek Station, a working sheep farm, for a taste of country life from a local expert including a welcome reception and an Aussie barbecue lunch. The nation’s capital, Canberra, was once little more than a sheep station. Planned in 1908 and designed by an American architect its place as the seat of the federal government ended decades of rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne. On arrival You’ll tour through Parliament House with a local guide and visit the Australian War Memorial before enjoying dinner with your Tour Director and fellow travellers. Day 2: Canberra - Beechworth

Before departing Canberra, you’ll visit the summit of Mt. Ainslie in Canberra Nature Park to take in views of this unique city and surrounding ranges. Then journey over the mighty Murray River into Victoria taking the scenic route to historic Beechworth, Victoria’s best preserved gold rush town for your unique overnight stay in one of the Bed and Breakfast properties. Get to know Beechworth with an orientation and enjoy some free time to explore the legendary Beechworth Bakery as well as antique shops, galleries and the museum. Day 3: Beechworth - Melbourne

Travel through Glenrowan and Ned Kelly country to culturally diverse and cosmopolitan Melbourne, for a city tour on arrival. This evening, perhaps take a relaxing walk to Southbank for a stroll along the Yarra River. (B) Hotel for 2 nights: Crowne Plaza, Melbourne

Day 4: Melbourne at leisure

Today Melbourne is all yours to explore. You’ll have time to discover some of the secrets of this exceptional city – a myriad of cafés, galleries, museums, markets, restaurants, laneways and parks await you. A melting pot of cultures Melbourne is perhaps the most European of any city in Australia and has a strong coffee shop and café culture that goes back to the roots of its Mediterranean settlers. If you wish to explore further afield you can join an optional tour to the famous Penguin Parade on Phillip Island. Or perhaps visit the Yarra Valley wineries, the Dandenongs and Puffing Billy Steam Train or Sovereign Hill’s goldmine. (B)

Day 5: Melbourne - Warrnambool

Guests on the 5 day Southern Capitals tour leave today with a transfer to Melbourne airport. Guests on the 6 day Great Ocean Road and Kangaroo Island Escape join this morning. Hold on to your seats today for one of the world’s great road trips – the Great Ocean Road. You’ll get plenty of photo opportunities along this coastal road. Stop in the coastal towns of Lorne and Apollo Bay before you visit the amazing Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge, before finishing the day in Warrnambool. Day 6: Warrnambool - Adelaide

This morning visit Worn Gundidj at Tower Hill State Game Reserve. The area was a rich food source for the Koroit Gundidj people whose descendants retain links with this country. Your guide will provide you with an Aboriginal perspective about flora, wildlife, volcanic formations, bush existence and medicinal practices. Continue into Mt. Gambier to visit the mysterious Blue Lake and then travel on to Adelaide, the gorgeous ‘City of Churches’. The green and elegant state capital has many well preserved colonial buildings and its cosmopolitan atmosphere is enhanced by a lively restaurant and entertainment scene. Botanic gardens, imposing 19th century buildings, museums, galleries and riverside walks add to the city’s charm. (B, D) Hotel for 2 nights: Stamford Plaza, Adelaide

Day 7: The Barossa

This highlight day starts with a sightseeing tour of Adelaide city, before journeying north for a visit to Australia’s best-known wine producing region, the Barossa. You’ll drive through quaint villages on your way to Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, where you’ll have the chance to purchase some gourmet delights (seasonal). Now it’s time for a ‘boutique tasting’ lunch at the South Australian Company Store. At the Company Kitchen you’ll enjoy a scrumptious meal, including a tasting plate, and wine tastings from two boutique wineries. Later, visit Jacob’s Creek winery to try some of their famous wines before returning to Adelaide. (B, L)

Day 8: Adelaide - Kangaroo Island

Spend some time relaxing or exploring this friendly city before you visit seaside Glenelg. Then continue to Cape Jervis to board your ferry to Kangaroo Island. Located just 10 miles off the coast, Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest and yet has no public transport. It’s isolated history has meant that the native wildlife has flourished as few predators have made the crossing from the mainland and you can expect to see incredible bird and wildlife including fairy penguins, kangaroos and the nations’ largest colony of sea lions in its nineteen national parks and conservation areas. The southern coast has windswept beaches and over forty shipwrecks yet the northern coastline offers sheltered beaches ideal for swimming. (B) Hotel for 2 nights: Aurora Ozone Hotel

Day 9: Kangaroo Island Sights

Today you’ll explore Kangaroo Island. First you’ll head to Flinders Chase National Park for some great photo opportunities at the Remarkable Rocks and Admiral’s Arch. At the western end of Kangaroo Island it has undisturbed eucalyptus forests and grassland as well as windswept beaches that seals call home. You’ll also have the chance to spot koalas, wallabies and kangaroos. Visit Andermel Marron Farm for a food and wine experience that captures much that is very special about Kangaroo Island. Andermel will host you with a visit to the Marron (freshwater crayfish) ponds and tanks. Taste some of their own Two Wheeler Creek wine and farm-produced bush tucker before sampling the Marron with lunch. Later, join a guided tour at the Seal Bay Conservation Park and walk among a breeding colony of Australian sea lions as they doze in the sun. Celebrate your trip this evening at a Farewell Dinner with your Tour Director and new-found friends. (B, FL, FD)

Day 10: Farewell from Adelaide

Cruise by ferry back to Cape Jervis then on to Adelaide to join a food expert for a guided tour of the 140 year old Adelaide Central Market. Enjoy the hustle and bustle, sample the culinary delights, meet the traders and share the history and secrets of the Market. Later, you’ll be transferred to Adelaide Airport for your onward flight. (B) Flights should not be booked to depart before 5.30pm. All tour options have an early start and will require pre night accommodation.
